2009 SaveOn Dragon Boat Festival – Nanaimo, B.C.
Jul 10
2009
Those of you who missed last night’s Festival roundup at the Oxy pub missed one hell of a party. Chix with Stix paddlers established themselves as the noisiest bunch of accomplished athletes attending. I, however, left early to escape the 100dB fun, since my hearing aids made it impossible to hear anything (I’ll explain that if anyone’s curious – just leave a comment and ask), and because my partner, who doesn’t have or need hearing aids, couldn’t hear anything either.
WHAT A ROWDY BUNCH OF TERRIFIC PEOPLE PADDLERS ARE!
The message is simple: If you didn’t know about the Oxy party, the free appies, or the raucous fun everyone shares, just show up next year, sometime after 6:00 PM, insert your ear plugs and have a ball!

“Paddlers to the right, others to the left…”
NOTE: You can download the images available without cost for non-commercial use, but you need to know how to do it, so listen up:
When you find an image you want, click on the thumbnail copy to make a larger copy appear on the right side of the screen. Then click on the BUY button. When you do that, you will see a product screen with four tabs at the top.
Click on the DOWNLOAD tab and download the image. That’s all there is to it! Some earlier dragon boat folders were not configured for free downloads – if you run across one of them, send me a note including the name of the folder, and I will update it for free downloads.

Hi there,
Would the person who posted the pic of me on this link http://islandroamer.smugmug.com/gallery/8866666_Zhia4#P-17-20
(page 28 image #330) kindly remove it. It’s not a flattering shot of me at all – folks might think I look angry and that’s not really the impression I’d like my fellow paddlers to to have of me. Thanks a bunch!

Hi, Amy! Sorry to cause you distress. I have deleted the photo, but must tell you I disagree – I thought it showed a lot of strength and character – you were on your way to a race, just stepping onto the bridge… in any event, it’s gone.
The equipment I use is limited by budget. I explain that because my 75-300mm zoom lens is completely inadequate for racing shots in Nanaimo and Sproat Lake, although it works better on the Gorge.
For that reason, I found myself focusing on people, rather than boats, and some of the results have been nothing short of incredible. That is why, had you glanced over the railing at the moment I snapped the shutter, you would have seen me pointing my camera at people instead of dragon boats.
Happy paddling,
Ken
