Southern Sweet Potato Pie

I know, I know… what’s sweet potato pie got to do with paddling? Hmmm… it’s off-season, and, er, paddlers eat, too

When I was a kid, a Sunday morning staple, and a holiday treat, was my grandfather’s Sweet Potato Pie. I never could figure out why it was served with dinner instead of after dinner, because it was chock full of sweet brown sugar and as far as I was concerned, it was desert.

I finally got around to creating a web page featuring this sweet treat – I hope you’ll like it…

Champion Sprint Series for 10-Paddler Boats on Vancouver Island?

Nightstar received such great feedback having our 9m Champion dragon boats on Sproat Lake that we thought a 9m Sprint Challenge here on the Island would be a great idea.

These 10-paddler boats are fast, fun and maneuverable, and we think it would be great to arrange a competitive circuit.

Nightstar Yacht Sales, which own four of these boats, would provide the boats at an attractive rate, and do everything it can to promote the series.

We’re thinking initially of four events, in Victoria, Port Alberni, Comox and Nanaimo.

Classes would conform to IDBF regulations where practical; the series would feature 250 meter sprints, with trophies for the series winners in each class.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, so lay ‘em on me!

I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone with an interest in organizing one of these events in their communities. I would also like to hear from teams that are interested in participating, so leave a comment if you want to join in the excitement!

Nanaimo (SaveOn) Dragon Boat Festival Society donates record amount

The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society’s 2009 SaveOn Festival generated a record $90,000 worth of donations for local benefactors.

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation was the recipient of $85,000. Another $5,000 was donated to the Nanaimo Hospice Foundation, making this the most successful year in the Festival’s history.

“The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society is unique as it donates 100% of the net proceeds to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation to assist in improving the diagnostic-treatment process of breast cancer patients.”

Well done! The Festival Directors and volunteers, along with 75 participating dragon boat teams and thousands of devoted spectators are to be congratulated for their dedication to the festival and its goals.
