There are many, many types of dragon boats, Malik, and many rules governing their use in competition. So, while a purist might insist that only 9m and 12m IDBF-certified boats be used in competition, others would point out that any boat using multiple paired paddlers can be considered a "dragon boat." I wouldn't call the snake boats or the shikaras dragon boats, but from a practical point of view, does it matter? There are strong similarities, and they're probably a ball to race!

How can traditional local boats like snake boats of Kerala, Shikara Boats of Kashmir be used as Dragon boats when they neither are identical in shape or design except that the are proppeled with single ended paddles

@Carol Stanley, Hi, Carol. If you want to reach the Gorging Dragons, write to gdpaddler@shaw.ca. While I can't speak to specific clinics, I can tell you that all of the stroke improvement clinics I have attended do require an hour or more on the water, putting principles into action under the observation of the coach.

Question: I live in Powell River, B.C. I understand you are doing a stroke clinic here end of August.

I have not been paddling for over a year now. Rotator cuff surgery and then personal situation. I am very interested in attending the clinic in P.R. but not sure if my fitness level is of the requirement needed to attend. I have been told there might be a fitness/paddling requirement.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

Your comments make a great deal of sense, but the exclusion is real. Are male cancer victims invited to survivor dinners? Do we see them on the boats during flower ceremonies? If not, why not?

I don't know that it's necessary a matter of exclusion per se vs there just not being enough formed teams out there to hold a separate division. I think if enough mixed survivor teams formed then a division would follow. Until then mixed cancer survivors would be in with other mixed teams. They can still paddle just not in a specially designated race unless there are enough boats to warrant it. I don't know that it necessarily enhances things to put mixed survivor teams in direct competition with womens survivor teams, any more than it would make sense to mix the regular mixed boats in with the regular womens boats. I think they need their own category but that involves someone or a group of people in some of the main paddling centres developing such teams.

It's like not having mens divisions at races, there just aren't enough men's boats out there to sustain it.

I'm all for getting more survivors of all stripes out on the water but the work needs to be done to form the teams. The more teams get out there, the less likelihood for exclusion as you would have enough for a dedicated division.
