Costumes are a long and established institution at festivals, but is it possible to go too far?

Blackface 300x107 This weeks Poll question: Is Blackface appropriate?

Is it possible that some costumes, deliberately or innocently, might come across as insensitive or outright racist? If you were a person of colour, or paddled with someone of colour, how would you feel about this costume?

What do you think? I encourage you to take a second and respond to our poll, which you’ll find on the right side of your screen.

(For more context, see McLeans.ca and The Globe & Mail and, also recently, The Guardian reporting on an Australian event and the involvement of Harry Connick Jr.)

You know how it is… you meet a really nice lady, arrange for a date, and take her to the the Dinghy Dock and look forward to a pleasant evening. Being a Gentleman, you of course offer her a pint of Guinness…what self-respecting guy wouldn’t?

Then she asks – demurely, of course – if she might have “just one more pint.” Sure, she’s a little tipsy, but what self-respecting paddler could turn this cutie down?

Only too late do you come to realize that having paid for dinner and two pints of Guinness (you, being a paddler, of course do not drink), you’re stuck with every dragon boat paddler’s nightmare… an inebriated Teddy!!

Let this be a lesson to you. Just because she’s cute, cuddly and covered with fur doesn’t mean she’s cut out for life with a paddler!

The 30 foot Swifts have proven to be a popular addition to the Waters Edge fleet, and I am hoping they will have time in the busy Whistler schedule to fit them in.
