swamped Millenium Dragon Boat

“Dragon boat paddlers rescued in Inner Harbour after being swamped, story and photos”
“Dragon boat piloted by Seattle team is swamped by fire boat’s wake”

Given all the comments we have heard, prompted by the swamping of a Champion 12m boat in Nanaimo last May, about how IDBF dragon boats are inherently unsafe, we wonder if the same folks will now claim that they’ll never paddle in a Millenium again?

The truth of the matter is that no dragon boat will survive a 2 to 4 foot high wave caused by prop wash from a craft in close vicinity. Is there’s a lesson to be learned here?

This event will also feature 250m Sprint racing between two Champion Model 912 dragon boats – these 10-paddler racing hulls are fast, fun and very photogenic. Don’t miss this event – the VCKC has superb facilities, and refreshments will be available.

The Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club is now home for a Champion 9m (10 paddler) dragon boat. It arrived on Tuesday, July 13th, and will remain at the VCKC facilities until August 28th.

A second is now on display at the Bay Centre Mall (Victoria) to promote the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival. On August 14th, it will be moved to VCKC, where it will remain until August 28th.

Both boats will be available to Victoria teams wanting to paddle in an IDBF-certified boat, and both will be available for demonstrations during the VCKC Guts & Glory 2500m dragon boat racing event. (A demonstration race between two of Victoria’s top dragon boat teams is also planned for the Guts & Glory event.)

Following the Guts & Glory event, the boats will be moving to Pearson College, where they will be used in support of the college’s new dragon boat program.

Vancouver Island teams wanting to check these exciting boats out should mark their calendars!

(Chix With Stix, Nanaimo, BC)

Nightstar received such great feedback having our 9m Champion dragon boats on Sproat Lake that we thought  a 9m Sprint Challenge here on the Island would be a great idea.

These 10-paddler boats are fast, fun and maneuverable, and we think it would be great to arrange a competitive circuit.

Nightstar Yacht Sales, which own four of these boats, would provide the boats at an attractive rate, and do everything it can to promote the series.
We’re thinking initially of four events, in Victoria, Port Alberni, Comox and Nanaimo.

Classes would conform to IDBF regulations where practical; the series would feature 250 meter sprints, with trophies for the series winners in each class.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, so lay ‘em on me!

I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone with an interest in organizing one of these events in their communities. I would also like to hear from teams that are interested in participating, so leave a comment if you want to join in the excitement!
